How to organise a Roman-themed kids’ party
The Romans were very hard workers but when they did have some free time they liked to have a party.
So if your children are interested in the Romans it is a great idea to organise a Roman-themed party with games, food, fancy dress and arts and crafts for kids’ activities to keep them occupied.
A school project on the Romans could also be concluded by holding a party like this – it’s a great way of learning by doing.
Baker Ross has all the curriculum crafts you need to inspire children to delve back in time and explore Roman culture.
Any Roman party guest will want to look the part. Roman Laurel Crown Kits will help girls and boys be Emperors and Empresses for the day. The laurel wreath was worn by Romans of high status to show off their authority and they eventually led to the modern-day crown.
Today, kids should wear them with pride – they just need to stick the green foam leaves onto a cardboard headband to get a most ‘empress-ive’ result!
But, of course, laurels aren’t really suitable for wearing in battle. This is where a Design-Your-Own Roman Helmet comes in handy. These pre-cut cardboard items can be coloured in and decorated with a red plume on top (not made from horse-hair like the original Roman helmet plumes!).
Baker Ross fibre tip pens and acrylic paint can help kids decorate and personalise the helmets – drawing a fish on the helmet is a great idea as this decoration was often sported by Rome’s finest legionnaires.
A Design-a-Card Sword will complete a young Roman soldier’s look. The card the swords are made from is strong enough to withstand the rough and tumble of the playground and the classroom.
Once the swords are coloured in with acrylic paints, they can be decorated with jewels. Baker Ross sells several different types of jewels – including Shell Sequins and Foil Shimmer Shower – ideal for making the swords sparkle in the sun.
Such artistic touches would be appreciated by a civilisation which placed great value on art. Roman art depicted the wide variety of Roman life – senators in togas, warriors on horseback, beautiful Goddesses bearing spears; all figures included in the Scratch Art Roman Magnets kit. Scratching the magnets’ specially-coated surface reveals bright rainbow colours beneath.
Kids who love to play the role of Caesar, moving Romans around according to their will, will love the figures they can create with arts and crafts. Roman Hand Puppet Sewing Kits and Colour-in Roman Finger Puppets can help kids create their own Roman Army of figures to play with.
If you are holding a Roman kids party then you might want to provide the sort of food and drink that appeared on Roman menus.
It would be quite hard to re-create favoured Roman dishes such as flamingos’ tongues and snails fattened on milk but the Roman diet does have a few similarities with our own!
Bread, cheese and grapes were popular Roman foods as were boiled eggs and salad.
The Romans also swore by eating lettuce at the end of the day as they thought it helped them to sleep. Sleeping should be no problem after a busy Roman kids’ party!
